This is a place for people who are retired… or close to it… and starting to wonder if they’re really finished working.

Not necessarily going back to what they were doing before, but figuring out what it might look like to contribute again, on their own terms.

If you’re reading this and that question hasn’t crossed your mind yet, it probably will.

I’ve been retired for over a decade, and for the most part it’s been exactly what I had hoped it would be. Freedom, flexibility, and time to do what I want, when I want.

Travel, family, projects in the shop, more time at the gym, and even a brief and not particularly successful attempt at golf.

There has been no shortage of things to do, and I’ve enjoyed that freedom even more than I expected. It turns out I’m pretty good at staying busy when there’s nothing I have to do.

And then, somewhere along the way, something began to feel different.

It wasn’t stress or boredom, and it wasn’t a desire to go back to what I had been doing before. It was quieter than that. Just the sense that something was missing.

Not everything. Just something important.

What I missed wasn’t the job. It was actually doing the work. Being part of something that required me to think, solve problems, and contribute in a way that moved things forward.

After more than forty years of doing that, it doesn’t just switch off completely.

And as I listened to others, it became clear this wasn’t just me. There are a lot of people in roughly the same place, retired, comfortable enough, with plenty to do… and still wondering if they’re finished contributing or just finished with the way they used to contribute.

For some, it’s about purpose. For others, it’s more practical. Things cost more than they used to, timelines stretch longer than expected, and “comfortable” doesn’t always mean what it once did.

Either way, the question is the same; What comes next?

That’s what this Substack is about.

I’ll be writing, probably weekly, about what it actually feels like to step back into something meaningful after retirement. What works, what doesn’t, and the tradeoffs that don’t always get talked about.

Some of it will come from my own experience, and some from conversations with others who are working through the same questions.

There isn’t some program here, and there’s no fixed path being offered. Just an ongoing exploration of what’s possible, and what’s realistic, when you’re ready to UnRetire.

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

There are a lot of us trying to figure out what to do with the experience we’ve spent a lifetime building. It seems like a conversation worth having, and one worth continuing.

I invite you to join me exploring the possibilities. Why subscribe?
